ladies only

“Ladies Only” is a brief fictional story that delves into the heterotopic nature of home-based beauty parlors in India. Typically situated in low-income neighborhoods, these parlors are operated by self-taught housewives who undertake the task of grooming. Unlike professionally-run salons, these establishments often transform a part of the house, such as a living room or a garage, into a women’s beauty parlor.

Functioning as both public and private spaces, these parlors become unique havens where women, particularly those in low-income communities, can freely participate and express their thoughts comfortably. The story follows a young girl engaged in a relationship with a man from a different community. During her visits to the parlor, where she has established a bond with the elderly parlor owner, the story unfolds.

Through the interactions in this unconventional beauty parlor setting, the narrative explores the development of a space where women can share intimate thoughts, question societal norms, and challenge existing patriarchal systems. The beauty parlor becomes a catalyst for women to forge connections and empower each other in a supportive environment.
