The hand painted banner was made collaboratively with the residents of Hauz Rani, a marginalized neighborhood in New Delhi India. In response to a discriminatory citizenship bill in India that aimed to deprive millions of Muslims and other marginalized communities of their citizenship rights, protests erupted in various neighborhoods, including Hauz Rani. The proposed legislation had the potential to impact the lives of long-standing Indian residents from marginalized communities, jeopardizing their citizenship rights. Amidst the movement, Varun Grover’s poem, titled ‘Hum Kagaz Nahi Dikhayenge’ (We will not show our papers), gained widespread popularity, advocating for collective resistance against the law through civil disobedience, urging everyone to refuse to comply with the document requirements imposed by the new citizenship legislation. The banner features a line from this poem. The community displayed a banner at the neighborhood entrance featuring a line from the poem to raise awareness and foster engagement in the protests.
