we sinful women

The poster is inspired by Kishwar Naheed’s bold poem “We Sinful Women.” The poem, inspite of being written in a different time, in a different country, resonated with me growing up as a young girl. Naheed wrote this provocative poem in a fundamentalist patriarchal society and was also imprisoned for her provocative verses.

I find it to be a powerful declaration of defiance of patriarchal norms and societal expectations that suppress women’s voices and autonomy. Written for women who refuse to conform to oppressive standards, Naheed’s choice of the term “sinful” is a deliberate reclaiming of agency, challenging the religious notions of how women should behave.
