we shall see

The mural was created in New Delhi in 2019 amidst the protests against the infamous discriminatory citizenship bill (CAA) in India, a law designed to strip millions of Muslims and other marginalized groups of their citizenship rights. Originating from my neighborhood, these protests quickly snowballed into a nationwide movement, sparked by the palpable sense of injustice within communities. Collaboratively designed with the protesters themselves, the mural served as a vibrant testament to this grassroots uprising. It celebrates the active participation and leadership of women of the neighborhood, who defied societal stereotypes to take charge within the movement. The mural also includes verses from Faiz Ahmad’s iconic poem “Hum Dekhenge” (We Shall See), a timeless anthem about standing up to oppression and persisting in the fight because we are certain that one day we shall see a world of justice.

The mural was later whitewashed by the police.
