staring back

The mural was created in New Delhi in 2019 amidst the protests against the discriminatory citizenship bill in India, a law designed to strip millions of Muslims and other marginalized groups of their citizenship rights. Originating from local discontent, these protests quickly snowballed into a nationwide movement, sparked by the palpable sense of injustice within communities.

Collaboratively designed with the protesters themselves, This mural addresses the numerous instances of police brutality inflicted upon protestors, some resulting in tragic fatalities. Inspired by a classic Hindi poem, it symbolically portrays the police as wolves, urging individuals to meet their oppressors’ gaze defiantly. The act of staring back is depicted as the initial step towards challenging the power hierarchies in our world.
