i know a spot

‘I know a spot’ is an ongoing participatory research & intervention project that seeks to document the experiences of women in navigating the city’s public space. It explores and maps various sites within the public space that women find comfortable and relaxed in, bringing forth multiple narratives around women’s leisure in the visible public domain, and encouraging women’s participation in public space.

The project stems from my interest in how women navigate the city’s public spaces and find/build spaces of leisure, a struggle that I am personally preoccupied with. Despite the claim that there exists mobility for women in cities, various barriers make women feel unwelcome in public spaces. The project investigates and documents spaces of leisure for women- nooks and spots in the city’s public realm, ‘private’ places within public spaces, where one can let down one’s guard and be at ease. Although these spaces have the possibility of being liberating, they testify that women do not belong in all public spaces.
